New Visions in Theological Anthropology (NViTA) Fellowship in Science-Engaged Theology

Your Fellowship research 

  • To start your Fellowship, and alongside your participation in the Summer Workshop, most participants will start by writing a journal article, or a chapter for a book already in progress, following the summer workshop. 
  • Even though we prioritise puzzles, your larger research project does not need to be (what we are calling) a theological puzzle. 
  • We are interested in three research areas within theological anthropology:  
    1.    Moral Theology & Evolutionary Biology
    2.    Spiritual Formation & Developmental Psychology
    3.    Ecclesiology & Cognitive Science.  

While we are especially interested in these three pairings, we welcome any proposals that engage theological anthropology and behavioral science. 

Eligibility 

  • Essential: PhD, completed by application deadline. 
  • Preferable: permanent appointment or tenure track, to any college, seminary or university department of theology, divinity, or religious studies. 
  • Because bias gets in the way of good science (and theology), we seek a diverse set of topics and participants. Therefore, we are especially eager to facilitate participation by women in theology. 
  • We encourage joint applications pairing together a scientist with a theologian, but this is not a requirement. If your application is successful, both parties could be eligible to attend the summer workshop as full participants. With joint applications, only one party need have a completed PhD. 

Your application 

Application Form – Fellowship in Science-Engaged Theology (2021 cohort) 

You will be required to provide the following documents: 

  1. Short description of the proposed research project (800 words or less). Be sure to make your adherence to our project guidelines clear, in particular by stating the subdisciplines you plan to use, both from theology and the relevant science. We strongly recommend you ask a scientist to review your application before submission. 
  2. Your CV. 
  3. Letter of support from your department chair or dean. This letter should indicate they would support your time to prepare for and take part in the Summer Workshop, and also to undertake follow up research related to outcomes from the Workshop. If it is not possible to upload your letter, you can arrange for it to be emailed to [email protected]. 

Selection criteria 

  • Overall fit with NViTA project vision 
  • A research question that has the potential to be made concrete (i.e., generate a puzzle) 
  • Project demonstrates familiarity with relevant science(s) 
  • Clear choice of relevant subdisciplines 
  • Likelihood of project long-term legacy/impact 
  • Academic work to date
